As a retired fraud prosecutor, I’ve spent over 14 years unraveling complex fraud schemes and holding those responsible accountable within our legal system. Throughout my 30-year legal career, I’ve witnessed the evolution of investigative methods, from traditional techniques to the innovative tools available today. Each year brought new challenges and insights, shaping my understanding of this ever-changing landscape.
Now, as a Gen Xer, I’m navigating a world increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence (AI)—a world where conversations about AI’s potential to replace traditional roles are becoming more prevalent. We’ve seen powerful AI systems, like ChatGPT, revolutionize tasks we once did manually. The question that lingers in my mind is: Can these technologies replicate the intricate work of investigators? Can they gather the evidence needed for a criminal trial, or are they simply convenient shortcuts to assist us in our diligent investigations?
While it’s clear that some criminals are harnessing AI for their advantage—think of the robocalls, identity theft, and the rise of synthetic identities—I’m acutely aware that we need to leverage AI’s potential to combat insurance fraud effectively. However, here’s the challenge: Is using AI enough to ensure accountability, or is it simply a tool to soften the financial blow to companies?
When businesses prioritize preventing losses over pursuing justice against fraudsters, I worry we’re losing sight of the larger battle. Are we truly winning when companies simply manage their costs? How can we hold these criminals accountable and dismantle their operations for good?
Join me at the AFA Conference for a discussion on integrating traditional fraud-fighting tools with AI solutions. We’ll explore how to blend experience with cutting-edge technology to not only reduce losses but also hold fraudsters accountable. Let’s strategize to address insurance fraud effectively in this new era. I’m eager to share insights and collaborate with you. See you there!
